Tide Band Looks Excellent in Tune-up Contest
Submitted by Don Conlee
The Picayune High School Marching Band participated in the Oak Grove Marching Festival this past Saturday, September 29,
and scored a 1 (Outstanding) in Drum Major, Color Guard/Auxiliary/Majorettes, Dance Team (Pride of Tide) and Drum Line.
The Overall Score of 2 (Excellent), shows the band is really making progress for the upcoming State Marching Band Festival in
Gulfport next Saturday.
Due to several weather problems and like most of the bands in the Gulf region, Picayune had just completed the final drill and
closer (final song) preparations days before the festival. Director Robert Green and assistant Tony Seal seemed pleased with
the progress, and are clearly looking forward to this week's final preparations for “Contest”. This year's theme is “Rock ‘n Roll
Tide”, featuring the Billy Idol's “Rebel Yell, the Styx hit Mr. Roboto, and the Byrd's classic “Turn Turn Turn”. (Note that the
tune was actually written by Pete Seeger, and is almost a quotation of Ecclesiastes 3, verses 1-8).
Band parents and supporters are encouraged to attend the final rehearsal of the show before contest on Thursday afternoon at
approximately 4:30 pm, as well as the Band Boosters meeting this Tuesday night at 7:30 pm in the band hall. The band will have
one last chance to polish during the halftime performance of the Poplarville home football game this Friday night. The Poplarville
band also participated in the Oak Grove festival and is also looking quite strong going into the State festival with a very
entertaining show (which Tide fans will get to enjoy Friday night as well.) Best of luck to both bands (and former PJHS
director Cindy Leggett's PRC Blue Devil band) in Gulfport !
Drum Major Allisha Woodard prepares the band to begin their performance.
