Maroon Tide wins "one" by turning "two's"
by Carey Meitzler
Picayune--In life, the saying goes that "a man's best friend is his dog". In baseball, there is a saying that "the double play is the
pitcher's best friend". Picayune senior righthander Andrew Lohnes will agree with that axiom after his complete game 8-3 victory
over Pass Christian gave the Maroon Tide their first win in Region 8-4A at the Field of Dreams.
Picayune turned double plays in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings as Lohnes induced 12 ground balls and scattered five hits,
allowing no earned runs in going the distance on the mound.
Lohnes gave up two unearned runs in the top of the second on two Maroon Tide miscues, but Picayune responded with 5 unearned
runs in the bottom of the inning for a 5-2 lead. T.J. House and Jacob Gandy each had RBI singles in the frame.
Picayune added single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. House got his second RBI on a ground out in the third as he
knocked in Brandon Jurich who led off the inning with a double. Jared Bales got an RBI as he plated Evan Nichelson in the fourth
inning after Nichelson had reached on a walk. Gandy, who had three hits on the night, knocked in Bryce Ladner who walked
with two outs in the fifth. Picayune had 9 hits in the game.
Picayune (3-12, 1-4) will travel to Pass Christian (3-12, 2-5) on Friday for a varsity game at 6:00pm for the second leg of the
home and home series.
