Daly & Fortenberry push Tide past D'Iberville 55-40

Lady Tide gets caught up in a numbers game in 53-50 loss

by Carey Meitzler

With fellow senior teammate Chris Dees unable to play due to an ankle injury, Ben Daly and Brandon Fortenberry took it upon

themselves to ensure Picayune stayed unbeaten in Region 8-4A play with a 55-40 win over the homestanding D'Iberville Warriors.

Picayune jumped to an 11-0 lead, but D'Iberville behind Kevin Norwood scored 8 points to make it 13-8 after one quarter.

The Maroon Tide led 26-16 at half and 38-27 after three quarters.  The Warriors cut the lead to 46-40 with 2:08 left in the game,

but Daly scored on a lay up and Fortenberry scored on a put-back of a missed shot and a short jumper to make it 52-40 just

moments later.  Daly hit one of two free throws and then scored again on a lay up to make the final 55-40.

Daly had 18 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 blocked shots to pace Picayune (15-3, 5-0).  Fortenberry had 15 points and

David McClain added 10 points.

Norwood finished with 16 points and Andrew Francois had 11 for the Warriors.

D'Iberville 53   Lady Tide 50

A scoring error by the clock operator and the official scorer appear to have cost the Lady Tide a win.

In the first quarter with 3:20 left, Karly Moran scored to make the score 9-6 with D'Iberville leading.

However, the score was put up as 11-4 on the scoreboard.  This was never corrected even though the Lady Tide argued

with the officials and scorers table personnel. (I invite you to listen to the replay of the game on this website to verify this

tradegy and listen to the interview with Coach Kristi Mitchell at half time of the Boys' game).

Brown led Picayune (10-7, 1-3) with 22 points and Moran had 15 points.

Raquel Burney had 17 points and Kaci Burkhalter had 15 points for D'Iberville (9-6, 2-2).

Below is my scoresheet as I covered the game on WRJW and iHigh.com (scanned in).

Use it to listen to the sequence from Moran's basket at 3:20 left in the first quarter and you

will see and hear the mistake.

Notes:  M is a missed free throw; a solid dot is a made free throw. PB is a put back of a missed shot

for a score and L after a player's number is a lay up.  A circled 3 is a three pointer unless it has a line

drawn from the scorer to the circle, then it denotes an assist.

Please understand, I am not making any accusations that anyone did anything intentionally wrong; a mistake was made,

it was never corrected and in the end Picayune lost by 3 points when in reality they were ahead by 1 point.
