GIRLS: Picayune 57 Oak Grove 47
The Oak Grove Lady Warriors gave the Lady Maroon Tide all they could
handle for a half, but Picayune
turned up their defense a notch in the 3rd period and held off a late Lady
Warrior surge to win 57-47 at
Kelly Wise Memorial Gymnasium. With the win, Picayune moves to 15-5
overall and 2-1 in division play.
Picayune jumped out to a 9-1 lead only to have that lead erased by a furious
Oak Grove rally that saw the Lady Warriors tie it at 11-11 with 1:34 to play
in the quarter. Picayune got a bucket from Jamelle Clark on an assist from
Dedrea Magee to give the Lady Tide a 13-11 lead.
The two teams play a back and forth second stanza that saw the score tied
five times before Picayune eventually build a 24-17 lead with under a minute
to play. Oak Grove's Colby Stallings 3 pointer from deep in the left corner
with :30 left made it 24-20 at the half.
Picayune's defense held Oak Grove scoreless until the 3:53 mark of the 3rd
quarter, while the Lady Tide's Ashley Bell caught fire to help Picayune increase
their lead to 39-27 lead after three quarters.
Bell, who finished with 21 points and 9 rebounds, was scoring from inside and
outside and at the free throw line as Picayune built a 19 point lead with 2:49 to
play. The Warriors refused to quit and eventually cut the lead to 57-47 behind
the shooting of Stallings and Logan James down the stretch.
Bell's effort was supported by Toi Jones with 15 points and 10 assists.
