Picayune sweeps Poplarville at Kelly Wise

Picayune's basketball teams won all three games played at Kelly Wise Memorial Gymnasium

against the visiting Poplarville Hornets.  Picayune's intensity matched the percolating temperature

inside the gym and they came away with a sweep of the games.

JV Boys 60  Poplarville 59

Wayne Mickel sank two free throws with :22 left to lift Picayune to a 60-59 victory in the JV Boys action.

Lady Tide 62  Poplarville 46

Picayune (15-2, 5-0)  used a strong second quarter, outscoring the Lady Hornets 20-3 to lead 36-11 at

the half and went on to win 62-46. Picayune's defense held Poplarville leading scorer Larke Nightengale

scoreless in the first half and five points on the evening.

Poplarville made a run at the Lady Tide outscoring Picayune 21-12 in the third quarter and cut the lead to

48-32, but Picayune held serve in the fourth quarter to gain the win.

Dedrea Magee pumped in 29 points to lead the Lady Tide while Jamelle Clark added 12 points and

Breonne Spikes chalked up 11 points. Chanel Wills returned to the line-up after a two week absence

due to a car accident and finished with 7 points and pulled down ten rebounds. Ebony Lewis had 3 points

for the Lady Tide.

Destany Pearson tallied 12 points for Poplarville (4-5,1-3).

The Lady Tide will travel to Carriere on Friday to take on Pearl River Central.

Maroon Tide 83  Poplarville 47

Picayune trailed the Hornets early, but came storming back with a vengeance to cruise past

Poplarville 83-47. The win pushed the Maroon Tide to 14-2 overall and 5-0 in division 8-4A.

Poplarville (9-3,1-3) led 8-7 on a basket by Brandon Peters with 4:10 left in the first quarter. 

Picayune, behind the play of Darionne Jones, Chris Griffith, and Brandon Fortenberry, went on a

12-3 run to lead 19-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Picayune turned up the defense in the second quarter holding the Hornets to five points while

posting 15 of their own. Fortenberry hit a running 23 foot three pointer at the buzzer to make

cap off a 9-0 run by the Maroon Tide giving them a 34-16 advantage at the break.

The Maroon Tide outscored the Hornets 29-17 in the third quarter and lead 63-33. 

Chazz Hawkins led the way with 18 points followed by Chris Griffith who had 17 points and

pulled down 6 rebounds.  Darionne Jones added 14 points and Brandon Fortenberry finished with

13 points.  Peters led Poplarville with 14 points.

Picayune travels to Pearl River Central on Friday.
