by Carey Meitzler

Gulfport 's Larry Frye caught three touchdowns from quarterback Greg Anderson to propel the

Admirals past Picayune 27-17 at Gulfport's Milner Stadium. Frye's last score, a 37 yarder on a

post route with 4:12 left in the game, proved to be the game winner as Gulfport stayed unbeaten

with their third win in as many tries. Picayune falls to 2-1 with the loss.

Picayune scored first on a 10 yard run by junior fullback Tyler Lee with 5:33 left on the first

period clock. The Tide drove 67 yards in 7 plays. Senior Scott Hillery added the point after

touchdown for a 7-0 lead.

The lead was short-lived as Gulfport marched 80 yards in 8 plays on their next possession.

Quarterback Greg Anderson found Frye on a quick slant from 11 yards out for the touchdown.

Cody Carlson's PAT knotted the score at 7-7 with 1:24 to play in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, the Tide lost the services of junior tailback Corderis Brown as he

suffered what appeared to be torn ligaments on an 8 yard gain moving the ball to the Gulfport

35 yard line. The Tide would move the ball to the Admiral 20 yard line before fumbling it away.

Picayune scored with 4:50 left in the second quarter on a 2 yard run by senior tailback Cody

Bales that capped off a 10 play 67 yard drive. Hillery knocked through the PAT for a 14-7

lead with 4:50 left in the second quarter.

Cody Bales had 141 yards on 28 carries

Late in the 2nd quarter, Gulfport intercepted a pass at the Tide 49 yard line. Two plays later,

Anderson found Frye down the left sideline for a 48 yard touchdown pass with :10 left in the

half. Carlson again converted the PAT and the half ended in a 14-14 deadlock.

Midway through the 3rd quarter, Picayune drove from their 8 yard line to the Admiral 21 yard

line. On fourth down, Scott Hillery kicked a 37 yard field goal to put the Tide up 17-14. The

drive began with 7:31 left in the 3rd quarter and moved into the 4th quarter as the Tide ran

18 plays before calling on Hillery with 9:58 left in the game.

The Tide held the Admirals on their next possession and forced a punt. Picayune set up shop at

the Gulfport 48 and moved down to the 17 yard line. On fourth down, the Tide elected to go for

the first down, but the Admirals forced a Tide fumble and returned it out to their own 34 yard

line. On the third play of the drive, Anderson found a streaking Frye for the 37 yard game winner.

Gulfport would intercept an Alex Riser pass on the next possession and return it to the Tide 7

yard line. On the next play, Jeremy Walker scored around left end. The PAT was blocked and

the final count was 27-17.

Bales finished with 141 yards on 28 carries. Senior Tim Gaff had 8 rushes for 46 yards.

Sophomore Robert Jackson had 10 rushes for 57 yards, as he was inserted to spell Bales after

Brown's injury. On the night, the Tide rushed 62 times for 321 yards, but hurt their own cause

by losing three fumbles deep in Admiral territory.

For Gulfport , Anderson finished 10 of 20 for 204 yards with the three TDs to Frye.

The Tide (2-1) will travel to Biloxi next week in their final non-division game.
