The never-say-die Lady Tide rallied from four runs down to overtake the
Poplarville Lady Hornets 8-7 on a blustering night at the Lady Tide softball
complex. The win pushed Picayune's
record to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in district.
After holding Poplarville scoreless, the Lady Tide scored three runs in the
home half of the first inning. Allison "Dink" Bynum roped a triple to right
center field that plated Courtney Dickens and Kellye Bolar who walked
and singled respectfully to start the inning. Cassie Rabion followed with a
sacrifice fly to score Bynum to put
Picayune up 3-0.
The Lady Hornets did not lay down as bunched together three consecutive
singles with a sacrifice fly to score two runs in the top of the second to cut
the lead to 3-2. They added one run in the third, another run in the fourth
and three in the fifth to lead 7-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, Picayune would get one run back when Katie
Kent singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a bunt by Kasey
Mitchell, and scored on a RBI single
from Dickens to make the score 7-4.
Picayune held Poplarville scoreless in both the sixth and seventh.
When the Lady Tide came to bat in their last chance, it appeared that t
hey had fire in their eyes as their
bats came alive.
Breonne Spikes single, but was erased at second base on a fielders choice
off the bat of Katie Kent. Sarah Trexler slapped a grounder to the Poplarville
second baseman that was mishandled and Kent raced to third on the play
putting baserunners at first and third. Kasey Mitchell legged out a bunt
single that allowed Kent to score making it 7-5. Dickens hit into a fielder's
choice forcing out Mitchell at second and moving Trexler to third base.
Kellye Bolar singled to score Trexler
cutting the lead to 7-6.
Trailing by a run with two outs, Katie Hebert stepped to the plate and
slapped a triple to right center field that enabled both Dickens and Bolar
to score and give the Lady Tide a
heart stopping win 8-7 win.
Picayune will host five district games next week starting with Long Beach
on Monday.
