Lady Tide sweeps
Bay High 6-4, 4-0
by Carey Meitzler
The Picayune Lady Maroon Tide was determined to rebound
from their 4-0 loss earlier this week to district leader Long Beach
and was able to do so in fine fashion as they got two strong pitching
performances in sweeping Bay High on Thursday by 6-4 and 4-0
margins. The sweep move the Lady Tide's district record to 4-2
and in sole possession of second place
behind Long Beach (7-0).
Picayune 6 Bay High 4 (10 innings)
In game one, Picayune had to go into extra innings to defeat the
Lady Tigers. Bay High, the designated home team in the first game,
had chances to win the game in the seventh and eighth innings, but
Picayune's defense held them in check.
Picayune scored 3 runs in the top of the tenth and junior Kasey
Mitchell worked out of a jam in the bottom of the inning allowing
only a single run, to record the win. Mitchell struck out four and
allowed six hits as she went the distance
for Picayune.

Picayune 4 High 0
Eighth grader Katie Hebert hurled a shutout striking out 12 batters,
walked five, and allowed only two
infield singles in recording the shutout.
Picayune scored 2 runs in the second inning to draw first blood. Senior
Cassie Rabion led off with a sharp single to right and moved to second
on a sacrifice bunt by Katie Kent. Sarah Trexler walked. The runners
moved up a base on a passed ball and Tara Dunn grounded out to first
base scoring Rabion and moving Trexler to third. Trexler scored on a
wild pitch two pitches later to make
it 2-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kellye Bolar singled to right to start the inning.
Hebert, squared to bunt, then retracted her bat and swung away slapping
a single just inside the bag at first base. Kasey Mitchell came on as the
courtesy runner for Hebert. Allison Bynum's groundout to the pitcher
moved the runners up one base. Rabion then hit a sharp grounder that
got past the second baseman to score Bolar. Mitchell would later scored
on a passed ball by the catcher for
Picayune's fourth run.
Picayune will host Pass Christian on Friday for a twinbill that is scheduled
to get underway at 5:00pm.
