Lady Tide holds off Bay High 4-3

by Carey Meitzler

Picayune--The Lady Tide turned double plays to end both the sixth and seventh innings and got their first Region 8-4A win

of the season with a 4-3 win over Bay High at the Lady Tide Softball Complex.  Bay High came into the game in third place

in the league.

After Bay High scored a run in the top of the first, Picayune got two runs in the bottom of the inning.  Mallorie Mixon bunted

and reached base when the throw was dropped at first base. Katie Kent bunted safely reaching first base and both runners

moved up on a passed ball. Brandi Rabion's grounder brought home Mixon. Kent later scored when the Bay High catcher

attempted to pick her off third base and the throw bounced away giving Picayune a 2-1 lead.

Bay High added a run in the top of the third to tie the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Tiffany Devore walked to start the inning.  Brooke Meitzler bunted and was safe

when the throw was bobbled and Devore ended up at third base and Meitzler at second base.  Mixon

singled to plate Devore and Taylor Seals followed up with a grounder to short that allowed Meitzler

to score for a 4-2 lead.

Bay High scored one run in the top of the sixth and had runners at second and third with one out.

The batter hit a fly ball to shallow centerfield that was caught by second baseman Tiffany Devore.

The runner on third tagged and attempted to score, but was out at home as Devore threw to catcher

Mallorie Mixon who tagged out the runner at home to end the inning.

The Lady Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh.   Pitcher Katie Kent caught

a soft liner and threw to third baseman Brooke Ladner to double off the runner and end the game.

Maroon Tide skipper Kristi Mitchell was pleased with her youthful team's win.

"We are young overall, but tonight our young ones made some plays.  We are starting to learn how

we need to play. This was a good win for us."

The Lady Tide starts two 7th graders, two 8th graders, one 9th grader, two sophomores, and two juniors.

Picayune (5-10, 1-4) will play at D'Iberville on Thursday.
