Lady Tide steals one from South Jones 8-7
by Carey Meitzler
It ain't over til its over. That cliche rang true in Ellisville on Thursday night as the Picayune Lady Tide
came away with a 8-7 win over the homestanding South Jones Lady Braves. If the Lady Tide bus
were to have been pulled over after the game, it would have been easy to charge them with theft;
that is in regards to their come from behind win when this game looked over.
Picayune went up 2-0 in the fourth on Mallorie Mixon's single that scored Tiffany Reed and Katie Kent
who singled to start the inning.
The Lady Braves put up 4 runs in the bottom of the frame to lead 4-2 before Kent made a nice running
catch to end the inning with the bases loaded.
In the bottom of the fifth, South Jones had already plated one run when they were the beneficiary of
a close, and apparent bad call of a play at first that was ruled in their favor. After a lengthy discussion
between Picayune Head Coach Kristi Mitchell and the home plate umpire, play resumed and South
Jones took advantage of their good fortune by adding two more runs in the inning to lead 7-2.
In the sixth, Katie Kent and Taylor Seals singled with Seals giving way to Tiffany Devore as a pinch runner.
After an error on a ball from the bat of Mallorie Mixon loaded the bases, Natalie Guy earned a base on
balls to bring in a run. Two outs later, Jessica Rancifer drove in Devore, but Mixon was tagged out trying
to score leaving the score at 7-4.
The seventh started with Amanda Green and Hillary Dickens drawing base on balls and South Jones
brought in a new pitcher. Brooke Meitzler ran for Dickens and was forced out at second on Tiffany Reed's
fielder's choice. Katie Kent walked to load the bases. Tiffany Devore lofted a ball to left that was misplayed
by the left fielder allowing Green to score, but Kent was thrown at third. Mixon singled to load the bases.
Guy walked to force home Devore. With the score at 7-6, Millie Gill hit what appeared to be a routine
grounder back to the pitcher that would end the game, but the throw to first was wide of first base allowing
Reed and Mixon to score for an 8-7 lead.
South Jones got an infield single to open the bottom of the seventh, but that was all they could muster as
Picayune held on for the win.
Picayune (16-6) will be host to the same South Jones team for a Varsity only game at 6:00pm.
