Lady Tide puts clamps on Long Beach 5-0

by Carey Meitzler

Picayune-- Picayune needed to defeat Long Beach by at least two runs to hold serve with Long Beach in the district standings.

The Lady Tide did a little bit more than that as they shut out the visiting Bearcats 5-0 enabling Picayune to avenge an earlier

season loss by two runs and putting Picayune in the lead for the district championship if the Lady Tide can win their last two

district games with D'Iberville (Sept 22) and West Harrison (Sept 24).

Picayune scored a run in the bottom of the first when Tiffany Devore doubled to score Brandi Rabion who had reached on a

single and was advanced to second on a single by Hillary Dickens.

With pitcher Sarah Dodd and her stingy defense keeping Long Beach scoreless, the Lady Tide added another run in the third

when Devore scored on a single to right from Amanda Green to make it 2-0.

In the fifth, Picayune loaded the bases on singles by Hillary Dickens, Taylor Seals, and Green.  With two outs, Brooke Ladner

stroked a bases-loaded double just inside the left field line to score pinch runner Shalyn Stevens and Taylor Seals.

The final Picayune run came via a sacrifice fly off the bat of Taylor Seals in the bottom of the sixth that scored courtesy

runner Jennifer Walker from third base.

Sarah Dodd has pitched five shutouts this season, a tough feat in slow pitch at any level.

Picayune (11-4, 3-1) will play at the Meridian Community College Invitational on Saturday with the following schedule:

10:45am vs Clarkdale           12:00pm vs NE Lauderdale          1:20pm vs West Lauderdale
